August 28, 2009. It was a great day, about 3 hours of shooting time with this little 3 mo old baby Kevin, Sam and Tasha's first boy! I was very excited to get my hands on this little cutie as soon as I could. I went and bought some preps like gift box, butterfly, ribbon, beany hat and material at Michael's, local fabric store and second hand baby store. I set up studio, tested all the lights and camera equipment an hour before the couple has arrived. I was ready and was hoping for Kevin to be asleep, even had mom to breast feed him and set up two heaters. Nothing helped. Kevin was very awake and wanted to negotiate his contract and nudity clause right away! Well, we just had to roll with that. For the studio setup I used black background (muslin), small coffee table for the baby to get off the floor (easy to shoot), one soft box (alien bee on the right), one 430 canon ext flash with see thru umbrella to the left, one one 430 canon ext flash on the right flashing towards the front. To sync all of them I used my birthday gift, cyber sync adapters and commander (very cool, easy to use and comparatively cheap investment). Parents and my boyfriend Eric were my major help, they were holders, baby safekeepers, and baby entertainers! Frequent potty and feeding brakes for the star, and everyone is happy and clean! (Well, not really, yeap, we had couple of accidents. I learned not to take the dipper unless I am ready with the shot. .... Then I did a lots of processing in photoshop...and here he is, cute little ham in the box!

Here it is.. the droplet series set-up. I got the idea from an article in Digital SLR Photography (a UK magazine). The article was by Ross Hoddinott.
The light table is not essential, but helps me use a faster shutter speed and makes camera shake a little less visible. I also tried this outside on a sunny day, it worked just fine. I use cheap screw-on macro filters i got off ebay--as i don't have a macro lens.
I try to find really simple subjects that will create an interesting repeating pattern. The distance the drops are from the subject changes how the reflection looks..I think further is better. I need to buy more play-doh to prop it higher. haha, anything works, but remember that the side props will reflect on your subject. The article writer used a large tube of white paper i think. My shots would turn out much better if I had a tripod that pointed straight down, but my tripod is quite cheap and does not do so. I also drink coffee, and my hands are not steady. Ah, the challenges. Anyway, this is it. Very low tech indeed.
